What is willbe ETFselect?

willbe ETFselect is the digital ETF savings plan solution Liechtensteinische Landesbank (LLB) – a bank with Moody's «Aa2» rating and over 160 years of tradition. Liechtenstein itself has an AAA rating from S&P. What makes it special is that instead of countless ETFs, willbe offers a hand-picked selection of over 50 ETFs and funds.

The concept: «Netflix for ETFs» – curated rather than overwhelming. For each segment (world, Switzerland, Europe, etc.), there is maximum 1-2 top options. This saves analysis time and prevents decision paralysis.

Target group:

  • ETF beginners who want to get started without spending hours researching
  • Passive investors with a focus on savings plans
  • Swiss citizens with international investments (favourable currency exchange rates!)
  • Investors who prioritise simplicity over diversity

My test: willbe ETFselect experiences

To give you an insight, I have CHF 1,000 invested with willbe, to test the offer under real conditions. Here are my first impressions:

Opening an account: Quick and easy

  • Registration: 4 minutes online (name, address, etc.)
  • Video identification: Very convenient in 3 minutes via smartphone
  • Account active: After 24 hours – faster than many Swiss banks

First investment: child's play

I have a monthly savings plan set up over CHF 250:

  • ETF 1: Vanguard FTSE All-World (ISIN: IE00B3RBWM25) – CHF 150/month
  • ETF 2: UBS SPI (CH0131872431) – CHF 100 per month
  • Ongoing willbe fee: CHF 0 ✅

This is how it works:

  1. Open the app → «Create savings plan»
  2. Select ETFs from clearly arranged categories
  3. Set amount & frequency
  4. Done – automatic execution every month

What struck me was:

  • Comprehensible user guidance: Everything relevant at a glance
  • ✅ The app displays a clear cost overview before every purchase
  • dashboard to Overview Ensures full control over invested assets and savings

Local Lake Zurich fund discovered

The preliminary selection of funds is very exciting. Naturally, it includes the important major indices, such as the Vanguard All World ETF and the SPI ETF from UBS. Both are very popular in the Swiss franc community.
While browsing through the ETF list, I came across, for example, the LLB Shares Lake Zurich Region (CH0421963809) – a fund comprising small and medium-sized companies from the Lake Zurich region. Without pre-selection, such funds would fail or remain unknown to many investors.

Key data on the Lake Zurich Fund:

  • TER: 1,21% p.a. (higher than passive ETFs because actively managed)
  • Focus: At least 51% SMEs from the Lake Zurich region, max. 49% extended region
  • Exemplary cantons: Zurich, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, St. Gallen, Graubünden, Glarus, Schwyz, Zug, Aargau
  • Special feature: Local focus, targeted stock picking from high-quality Swiss companies

Why exciting? If you want to invest in Switzerland's strongest economic region and support local businesses, this is an interesting option. At willbe completely free of trading and custody fees (LLB fund privilege!).

Currency exchange test: Extremely fair and inexpensive

I exchanged CHF 500 for international ETFs (USD):

  • willbe exchange rate fee: 0.3% = £1.50
  • Wise comparison: 0.41% = £1.40 (comparison on test day)
  • Swissquote comparison: 0.95% = £4.75

Conclusion: With 0.3%, willbe actually offers the interbank rate. one of the most favourable currency exchange rates For Swiss people – a definite plus!

ETF selection: What does willbe offer?

willbe ETFselect currently has over 50 ETFs and funds (As of 13 November 2025). The principle: Only individual top picks per segment, reviewed by LLB investment professionals.

The curation principle:

Instead of 50 MSCI World ETFs, there are Only 2 options:

  • UBS Core MSCI World (most favourable, TER 0.06%)
  • iNdx Global Paris Aligned (ESG-focused, TER 0.32%)

Advantage: No analysis paralysis. You know: «This is a top fund for my needs.»

Disadvantage: Those seeking specific niche ETFs (e.g. robotics, artificial intelligence, clean energy) will not find them here.

Special feature: LLB funds completely free of charge

All LLB fund (e.g. Lake Constance, Lake Zurich, Global Dividend Pearls, Green Bonds) are:

  • No trading fees (Purchase & sale CHF 0)
  • No custody fees (0% per annum)
  • ✅ In a savings plan or one-off investment

This is what actively managed funds do more competitively priced to passive ETFs. Nevertheless, our Swiss franc investment philosophy remains clear: for long-term wealth accumulation, we primarily rely on low-cost, passive ETFs. LLB funds can be an exciting addition to regional or thematic focuses, but in our view, they are more of a supplement than a building block due to their higher running costs.

Costs: How high are the fees really?

Trading fees:

transaction typeFee
ETF Savings PlanCHF 0 ✅
LLB funds (purchase/sale)CHF 0 ✅
ETF one-off purchase < CHF 5,000CHF 2
ETF one-off purchase ≥ CHF 5,000CHF 2 + 0.25%

Additional costs:

  • Federal stamp duty: 0.075% (Swiss securities), 0.15% (foreign securities) on purchases
  • Stock exchange fees: Depending on the trading venue

Example of a one-off purchase:

  • CHF 3,000 investment (US ETF) → CHF 2 + CHF 4.50 stamp duty = CHF 6.50 total
  • CHF 10,000 investment (US ETF) → CHF 2 + CHF 25 (0.25%) + CHF 15 stamp duty = CHF 42 total

Execution: Daily from Monday to Friday

Deposit fees (annual, degressive):

deposit volumeAnnual fee.ExampleSwiss franc community special

Important: LLB funds are completely free of custody fees – a clever incentive for regional investment!

Currency exchange:

  • Only 0.3% at the interbank rate – cheaper than Wise, Revolut or most traditional banks (~1-2%)

Calculation examples:

Scenario 1: Savings plan beginners

  • Deposit: CHF 10,000
  • Savings plan: £200/month
  • Annual costs:
    • Custody fee: CHF 30 (0.30%)
    • 12x savings plans: £0
    • Total: £30 = £2.50/month

Scenario 2: Larger portfolio

  • Deposit: CHF 50,000
  • No savings plans, just buy and hold
  • Annual costs:
    • Custody fee: CHF 125 (0.25%)
    • Total: £125 = £10.42/month

Scenario 3: International investor

  • Exchanges CHF 1,000 → USD monthly for US ETFs

Disadvantages: Where is there still room for improvement at willbe?

4. Young offering – limited track record

My conclusion: Who would benefit from willbe ETFselect?

After my test investment and intensive examination of the offering, I consider willbe ETFselect to be an exciting solution for a specific target group.

willbe is particularly suitable for ETF beginners, who don't want to compare countless ETFs. Curating ~50 products reduces the decision-making burden – there are only 1-2 top options for each category. This saves time and prevents analysis paralysis.

A Another big advantage is the currency exchange. With a fee of 0.31%, willbe is one of the cheapest providers – significantly lower than Wise (0.41%), Revolut (0.51%) or banks (~1-2%). Anyone who regularly invests in USD or EUR ETFs can make significant savings here.

Getting LLB funds completely free of charge (no trading or custody fees) is a clever incentive. You won't find regional options like this easily elsewhere.

The custody fees (0.15-0.301% p.a.) are the trade-off for the curation and service of a top-rated bank. For deposits up to CHF 25,000, you pay a maximum of CHF 75/year – which is manageable for many if the other advantages are utilised.

The overall impression is not least influenced by the simplicity and transparency are positive Conclusion. I am impressed by willbe's philosophy of «word of honour» (no payment for order flow, all costs disclosed). For ETF beginners with international investments and a portfolio of less than CHF 30,000, willbe is a well-considered choice.

Swiss franc rating: 4.5/5 stars – Solid solution with a clear USP (curation + favourable currency exchange rates + good overview + free tax report), but not the right solution for everyone.

Transparency note: This article was created in cooperation with willbe. Nevertheless, the assessment is based on my own independent analysis.
