What will change with the AHV in 2026?

Monthly AHV pensions will remain unchanged in 2026. The Federal Council adjusts pensions every two years in line with price and wage trends – the last increase took place on 1 January 2025.

The major innovation in 2026: The 13th AHV pension is being paid out for the first time. On 3 March 2024, the Swiss people and cantons approved the initiative «For a better life in old age». This means that all AHV pensioners will receive an additional monthly pension per year – an increase of 8.3%.

The 13th pension is paid once a year in December, together with the regular December pension. Important: Only old-age pensions benefit from this. Widows', widowers' and orphans' pensions as well as disability pensions will continue to be paid 12 times a year.

New AHV maximum pension for individuals

The maximum monthly pension will remain at CHF 2,520 in 2026, while the minimum pension will remain at CHF 1,260.
However, the 13th AHV pension significantly increases the annual total:

Maximum pension: 13 × £2,520 = £32,760 per year
minimum pension: 13 × £1,260 = £16,380 per year

The minimum contributions will also remain unchanged in 2026. Self-employed persons, persons not in gainful employment and students will continue to pay CHF 530 per year. Swiss citizens living abroad who voluntarily join the AHV will pay CHF 1,010 per year.

As AHV pensions will not be adjusted in 2026, pension fund figures will also remain stable: the coordination deduction will remain at CHF 26,460 and the entry threshold at CHF 22,680.

New AHV maximum pension for married couples

The ceiling continues to apply to married couples: together, they receive a maximum of 150% of the maximum individual pension.
The maximum monthly pension for married couples remains at CHF 3,780. With the 13th AHV pension, this amounts to:

Maximum pension for married couples: 13 × CHF 3,780 = CHF 49,140 per year

That is CHF 3,780 more than in 2025 (CHF 45,360).

What is the AHV maximum pension?

You will receive the minimum pension if you have made continuous contributions since 1 January of the year in which you turned 21. For the Maximum pension (also Full pension ), you must also achieve a certain average income over your entire working life – the current figures can be found in the table below.

You will probably earn less in your first few years of employment. However, what matters is the average over your entire career. If you are promoted later on and earn significantly more from the age of 40, for example, your average may still exceed the threshold amount.

ImportantYou may none contribution gaps If you are studying until the age of 25, you should still voluntarily pay the minimum contribution during these years.
Calculation according to Scale 44
Pensions are calculated according to pension scales. Scale 44 applies to the maximum number of 44 contribution years and results in a full pension. If there are gaps in your contributions, a lower scale (1–43) is used for the calculation – you will then only receive a partial pension.

Married couples are subject to splitting: half of the total income earned during the marriage is attributed to each partner.
