How our IBAN calculator works

Our tool offers three functions in one. Here is a brief guide:

Tab 1: Check IBAN

  1. Enter a Swiss or Liechtenstein IBAN (CH or LI).
  2. Click on «Check IBAN».
  3. The tool checks the length (21 digits), check digit and BC number - and shows you the corresponding bank.

Tab 2: Calculate IBAN

  1. Select your bank from the dropdown (incl. all neobanks).
  2. Enter your account number (max. 12 digits).

Important: The calculated IBAN is mathematically correct. No IBAN calculator can check whether the account actually exists - only your bank knows that.

Tab 3: BIC/bank search

  1. Enter a search term: Bank name, BIC code, BC number or city.

Check IBAN - How to recognise typing errors immediately

Before you make a transfer, you should check the IBAN of the recipient. Our IBAN check checks:

  • Length: Swiss IBANs have exactly 21 digits.
  • Country code: Must begin with CH (Switzerland) or LI (Liechtenstein).
  • Check digit: Positions 3-4 are validated according to ISO 7064.
  • BC number: We check whether the bank clearing number (digit 5-9) exists.

Calculate IBAN from account number

Do you still have an old account number without an IBAN? Our computer will convert it. For this you need:

  • The BC number (bank clearing number) of your bank
  • Your account number (max. 12 digits)

The tool automatically adds leading zeros and calculates the correct check digit according to the Modulo 97 procedure (ISO 7064).

Example: BC number 700 (ZKB) + account number 1162385295 results in CH93 0070 0011 6238 5295 7.

Which bank belongs to this IBAN?

The digits 5-9 of a Swiss IBAN contain the BC number (bank clearing number or IID). This uniquely identifies the bank. Our tool shows you automatically:

  • Name of the bank
  • Location (head office)
  • BIC/SWIFT code
  • For neobanks: Note on the partner bank

Example: IBAN CH93 0070 0 011 6238 5295 7 → BC number 700 → Zürcher Kantonalbank, Zurich.

Find BIC/SWIFT code

The BIC (Bank Identifier Code), also known as SWIFT code, is an international bank identifier. You need it for:

  • Transfers outside the SEPA area
  • Payments in foreign currencies
  • Some international platforms and brokers

Good to know: For SEPA transfers within Switzerland and Europe, the IBAN alone is usually sufficient - the BIC is determined automatically.

A Swiss IBAN always has 21 digits and follows this structure:

What is a QR-IBAN?

Since the introduction of the QR-bill in Switzerland, in addition to the normal IBAN, there is also the QR-IBAN. The difference:

  • Normal IBAN: BC number in the range 100-9999
  • QR-IBAN: BC number in the range 30000-31999 (QR-IID)

The QR-IBAN is used if you want to use a structured reference (QR reference) on a QR-bill. The classic IBAN is sufficient for normal transfers.

Important: A QR-IBAN may only be used together with a QR reference - it is not suitable for normal transfers without a reference.

IBAN with neobanks: Neon, Yuh, Zak & Co.

Many Swiss neobanks do not have their own banking licence and use a Partner Bank. That's why your IBAN doesn't say «Neon», but «Hypothekarbank Lenzburg», for example.

Common errors with IBAN transfers

I see these mistakes again and again in my community:

1. typing error in the IBAN

Mixing up O and 0, I and 1, or swapped digits. Our IBAN check recognises these errors immediately by validating the check digits.

2. old account number instead of IBAN

Since the introduction of the IBAN, Swiss banks only accept IBANs for payment transactions. Use our calculator to convert your old account number into an IBAN.

3. IBAN from fraudsters

Be careful with invoices by e-mail: Fraudsters often forge invoices and only change the IBAN. Always compare the IBAN with previous invoices or call the sender.

4. confusion with neobanks

«I have Neon, but the invoice says Hypothekarbank Lenzburg - is that right?» Yes! Neobanks use partner banks, which is why the name is different.
