The Bitcoin converter in the first section retrieves this in real time from the Kraken crypto exchange, using the BTC/CHF trading pair. If Kraken is down, CoinGecko takes over.

Francs in Bitcoin: Amount in CHF ÷ exchange rate. The calculator in the «Convert» section shows you the value at today’s exchange rate, including a quick overview from 1 BTC to 10,000 sats.

What is a Satoshi?

A Satoshi, or ‘Sat’ for short, is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after its inventor, Satoshi Nakamoto. 1 Bitcoin is equal to 100 million Sats. This means you never have to buy a whole Bitcoin. Some apps display your balance directly in Sats, as this makes the figures easier to grasp.

Sats

Bitcoin

1

0.00000001 BTC

1,000

0.00001 BTC

100,000

0.001 BTC

1,000,000

0.01 BTC

10,000,000

0.1 BTC

100,000,000

1 BTC

Calculate Bitcoin profit

Although many apps and stock exchanges show you the current value, they don’t give you a clear return. You can work this out as follows:

Bitcoin purchased: Amount invested ÷ purchase price.

Selling price: Bitcoin purchased × selling price, minus the selling fee.

Profit: Sale value minus the amount invested.

Return: Profit ÷ amount invested × 100.

Here’s an example: You’ve invested CHF 1,000 (including fees) at a price of CHF 40,000. That’s 0.025 BTC. At a price of CHF 70,000 and a 1 % selling fee, you’ll receive CHF 1,732.50. Your profit: CHF 732.50, i.e. +73.3 %.

Calculating fees correctly

Always use the gross amount shown on your purchase receipt as the amount invested – that is, including fees and the spread. If you base your calculations on the amount excluding fees, your return will appear too high. The costs per purchase vary significantly depending on the app and stock exchange. You can see how much each provider charges in the Crypto Exchange Comparison.

Annual return rather than total return

+73 % sounds like a lot. Whether that’s a good thing depends on how long you’ve been waiting for it. If you select the month of purchase in the calculator, it will also show you the annual return. Bitcoin’s return compares with that of shares or a ETF Savings Plan comparable. For holding periods of less than one year, the calculator deliberately does not calculate an annual return, as short-term fluctuations would otherwise result in absurd figures.

Tip: Can you only remember roughly when you bought it? Select the month of purchase in the calculator. It will use the price at the end of the month as the purchase price, and you can override this using your receipt.

What if: Bitcoin since 2015

In the third part of the calculator, you can see what would have become of a one-off purchase or a monthly savings plan. Purchases are made at the closing price at the end of each month, starting in July 2015. Five examples, valued at the closing price at the end of September 2026:

Access

Paid in

Value at the end of September 2026

CHF 1,000 (one-off payment), end of July 2015

CHF 1,000

around CHF 253,000

A one-off payment of CHF 1,000, at the end of January 2020

CHF 1,000

around CHF 7,680

CHF 100 per month from January 2020

CHF 8,100

around CHF 20,770

A one-off payment of CHF 1,000, at the end of October 2021

CHF 1,000

around CHF 1,240

CHF 100 per month from October 2021

CHF 6’000

around CHF 10,790

The difference between 2020 and 2021 shows just how much the return depends on when you enter the market. At the end of October 2021, Bitcoin was trading at around CHF 55,900. Anyone who bought everything at that price at once was only up by around 24 % almost five years later. The savings plan started at the same time, however, made additional purchases at much lower prices.

Setbacks are part and parcel of the process

In hindsight, every bend looks easy. But it certainly wasn’t while I was riding:

Late 2017 to January 2019: from around CHF 13,500 to CHF 3,400, i.e. −75 %.

From the end of October 2021 to the end of 2022: from around CHF 55,900 to CHF 15,300, i.e. −73 %.

July 2025 to September 2026: from the previous month-end high of around CHF 94,100 to CHF 69,600, i.e. −26 %.

For each scenario, the calculator shows you the biggest drop since you entered the market. Ask yourself honestly: at −75 %, would you have continued to buy or sell?

It is those who can weather the downturns who reap the rewards. Not those who time the market perfectly.

Bitcoin and Taxation in Switzerland

Anyone who buys and holds Bitcoin as part of their private assets does not pay tax on capital gains in Switzerland. Conversely, you cannot deduct any losses. However, your Bitcoin must be included in your tax return and will be taxed as an asset at the year-end exchange rate set by the FTA.

The situation is different if the tax office classifies you as a professional trader, for example because you trade very frequently or buy on credit. Income from staking and mining is also considered taxable income. You can find all the details, including information on how to declare this, in our article on Crypto taxes in Switzerland. The calculator itself does not take taxes into account.

How much Bitcoin is a sensible amount?

For most people, 1 to 5 per cent of their invested assets is sufficient. Investing more than 10 per cent is not advisable for most people, as the fluctuations will then have a significant impact on your entire portfolio. Only invest money that you won’t need in the long term.

There are two ways to make a purchase:

Real Bitcoin: via an app or an exchange, or in your own wallet if you prefer. Eric, the founder of Schwiizerfranke, buys via Relai and keeps his Bitcoin in a hardware wallet. You can find other providers in the Crypto Exchange Comparison.

In the securities account: via a Bitcoin ETP or a Bitcoin ETF. It is often easier for beginners, as there is no risk of losing a password or seed phrase. However, there are ongoing costs involved.

We explain exactly how Bitcoin works in Bitcoin simply explained.
